Helping Your Best Friend Enjoy Their Golden Years

Medical Advances

Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, better nutrition, and loving owners, today's dogs and cats are living longer than ever. As pets age, however, their healthcare needs change. At Creekside Vet Clinic, we believe that growing older doesn't have to mean slowing down. With regular veterinary care, early disease detection, and personalized wellness plans, many senior pets continue to enjoy active, happy lives for years. Dr. Jan Crowe has cared for generations of pets throughout the Lowcountry and understands that every senior pet ages differently. Our goal is to help you recognize changes early, manage age-related conditions, and keep your companion comfortable and thriving.

When Is My Pet Considered a Senior?

While every breed ages at its own pace, many dogs are considered seniors between 7 and 10 years of age. Larger breeds often reach their senior years sooner than smaller dogs. Cats are generally considered seniors around age 10, although many remain active well into their teens.

Even if your pet appears healthy, subtle changes can develop long before obvious symptoms appear.

Why Senior Wellness Exams Matter

As pets age, we recommend more frequent wellness examinations because health conditions can progress much faster than they do in younger animals. Regular checkups allow us to identify problems before they become more serious.

Senior wellness visits may include:

  • Comprehensive physical examinations
  • Bloodwork and laboratory testing
  • Urinalysis
  • Weight monitoring
  • Dental evaluations
  • Mobility assessments
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Medication reviews

Early detection often leads to more treatment options and better long-term outcomes.

Senior Wellness Exams

As pets age, regular wellness examinations become increasingly important. Senior pets can develop changes that aren't always obvious at home. Routine examinations give Dr. Crowe the opportunity to monitor your pet's health, identify changes early, and help you make informed decisions about their ongoing care.

Common Health Concerns in Senior Pets

Older pets are more likely to develop conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, heart disease, dental disease, vision or hearing loss, and cognitive changes. Many of these conditions develop gradually, making regular examinations especially important.

Signs your senior pet should be evaluated include:

  • Drinking more water than usual
  • Changes in appetite
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Difficulty standing or climbing stairs
  • Limping or stiffness
  • Bad breath
  • Increased sleeping
  • Confusion or nighttime restlessness
  • Changes in bathroom habits
  • Lumps or bumps

Never assume these changes are simply "old age." Many can be treated or managed successfully when detected early.

Helping Your Senior Pet Thrive

Simple changes at home can make a significant difference in your pet's comfort and quality of life. Soft bedding, non-slip flooring, maintaining a healthy weight, appropriate exercise, and regular veterinary visits can all contribute to healthy aging.

Our team works with each family to develop an individualized plan that supports your pet's changing needs while helping them enjoy the best quality of life possible.

Partnering With You Every Step of the Way

Growing older is a natural part of life, but your pet doesn't have to face it alone. At Creekside Vet Clinic, we're committed to providing individualized care that helps your senior companion remain comfortable, active, and loved throughout every stage of life.
